Purpose Made Joinery

As you may have noticed from our last few posts, we do an awful lot of purpose made joinery.  Our workshop is constantly full of jobs that are specifically made to our customer's requirements and over the years we have made all sorts so we thought we would write a little post in order to show you a bit of what we do.

Bespoke furniture - we can make and paint whatever you require!
The picture above is of a train that was made for a children's library - it had to incorporate storage for plenty of books and seating for children in a way that was both fun and engaging for them in the hope that they will pick up the books and read.  Bespoke furniture really is our kind of thing and this job was designed, machined, painted and then installed in the library by ourselves.  The result was fantastic and as you can see the train would make any child want to approach it and play , which subsequently means they will pick up the books and read - a job well done if you ask us!

As well as many others, we have also done a bespoke joinery and painting job for a local school where the brief was to design, build, paint and install an area in the school that could be used for all manner of things like reading, eating, sitting together etc. The area looked fab once installed and little extra touches such as the finishing on the tables made it look a little more funky than the run of the mill school furniture that you normally see!

Tables and benches at a local school - funky paint finish!
To get the finished effect on the benches and tables shown above, the wood was sprayed black so that the paint soaked into the grain and then sanded back so that all you could see of the black was the paint that had embedded itself into the grain.  The furniture was then finished with clear lacquer in order to seal the paint in.  The finished effect of the furniture made it look very rustic but contemporary at the same time and the school was very happy with it!

We have done many other jobs too - if you fancy a look at a few more pictures of our work, as well as the ones that you have seen above and in our previous blog posts, please take a look here:

Word Play!

This week we have been making something a little different to normal for one of our major clients.  We constantly get new work sent through from this particular company for their displays and it's great because it always seems to be pretty creative stuff that gives us a challenge!  You may remember from one of our previous posts that the last job we did for this company was to make some CNC machined palm trees - this time we are making wooden words for them!

This week's task - CNC machining letters that make words!
We began to make the letters earlier on this week.  It took a little bit of time to get them just right to be made out of wood due to the sharp angles on the required font, but after a bit of a mess around on our software we managed to get them looking really good.  Once in situ in the company's stores they will really create a fantastic impact in regards to decoration!  When the letters are put in the correct order, the words spell out 'COOL' and 'GLAM'....

Custom made letters - how 'cool'!
....but like we said - that's when they are put into the correct order!  This morning when walking through the workshop we noticed that the letters had been used to create another word by one of our staff members - it's all good fun up here! 'LOL'!

Word play! 'LOL'!
We really love our trusty MDF cutting machine, it's always running making lots of different things and when we see the great results we get from it, it makes us proud to be in the CNC manufacturing industry!

Spray Painting On Pets? We've Heard It All Now...

After having a look around the internet this morning for inspiration to write a blog post about spray painting, we couldn't believe what we found...a website that sells spray paint for pets.  Yes...you read it right - people are now decorating their pets with art supplies. It seems that the new found trend for pet clothing is not enough and owners have now moved on to artistry on the fur of their beloved little animals!  Take a look below for some examples from petpaint.com - you won't believe your eyes!

Fancy yourself as a spray painter? Here's an idea for you! Photo credit - petpaint.com
As a company based in West Yorkshire that does a lot of spraying for big companies, we are used to spray painting wood and furniture so this to us really makes us chuckle!  We know its totally different paint to what we would use to spray paint furniture and god forbid the company has made it safe for the animals, but its nice to see that people still have a creative way of thinking for the use of a similar product!

Ever wanted to make your dog look like a zebra? Now you can! Photo credit - petpaint.com
Our workshops include a couple of different spray shops where our highly trained staff can spray all manner of furniture in many different finishes (polyurethane high gloss, lacquer, exterior wood finishing etc.) so if you ever need a quote for something spray painting (as long as its not your dog - we don't have that type of paint!) give us a call on 01484 462211 or drop us an email - office@spraycontracts.com .

Thoughts Of Summer...

This week at Display Worx Spray Contracts, we have been blighted with a bout of the fog and it just doesn't seem to be lifting!  Maybe its because we are right on top of a hill that is generally very bleak in bad weather and soon, the fog will pass, but currently it feels like we are in the midst of a cloud of doom....

The fog in Huddersfield this week!
Anyway...being from Yorkshire, we are ever the optimists and have found ourselves a great way to make us feel like summer is on its way by getting on with a big job on the CNC machine that screams sunshine.  As you may or may not know, we do a lot of CNC machining and this week, we have a fantastic job on to create lots and lots of palm trees for the window displays of a massive chain of shops.

Our CNC machining service has created all sorts of MDF designs!
Our trusty CNC machine has been working its little ball bearings off for us and now in the work shop we have a very neat stack of palm trees that are making us all think about the sunshine. These will look absolutely fab when they are all painted up in the windows.

Custom MDF machining for our customer!
We are able to create all sorts of things on our CNC machine and have highly skilled employees that can help to make just about any design become a reality.  Should you ever need to speak to us about a job that you may have, please drop us a line (we don't bite) on either office@spraycontracts.com or 01484 462211 - we would be more than happy to give you a quote!

Circular Beauty - Table Top Veneers

As a follow on to our last post, we thought that we would show you another piece of furniture that has arrived at our spray painting workshop in Huddersfield.

This impressive circular table top is made up of two different types of veneers - rosewood veneer and pippy oak veneer that is skillfully stitched together using glue thread.

Circular table top with veneers - unpolished state.

Below is a close up shot of the table top that shows just how well the veneers are joined - as you can see, the joints are extremely accurate!

Veneered table top - close up.

Over the next week or so, the table top will be sprayed and polished in a very similar way to the previous one that we showed you using top quality wood finishing products and we are sure that it will turn out spectacular - watch this space for the 'after' pictures!

The Beauty Of Rosewood

This week amongst all of our busyness, we have been doing a job for an interior design client of ours in West Yorkshire that will eventually end up in his customer's home in Manchester.  The job was to create a huge table top from a gorgeous piece of rosewood veneer that has a high gloss finish.

The boys in the spray shop have just finished the job and it's looking absolutely beautiful, so we thought we'd share with you bit about the process of turning a raw piece of wood into a highly polished, stunning piece of furniture.

Firstly, the rosewood top was sanded down in order to create a super smooth surface to work on.  The wood was then edged with a beveled solid iroko lipping to which the table top colour was then matched and stained to.
Raw rosewood table top with iroko lipping  - on the left the wood is sanded down.
After the surface was completely smooth, our amazingly talented spray painters got to work on turning the raw state of the wood into a highly polished surface.  Firstly, they started to build up and fill the grain, bringing out the markings of the wood by spray painting six coats of gloss AC lacquer onto the surface.  This was then left to dry and harden before the polishing began.

Once the lacquer had dried, the rosewood was then sanded flat again and the burnishing of the table top began. Firstly a cutting compound was used on the surface and then the high shine was achieved by the use of friction and pressure from a spinning pad on our burnishing tool.

It took a while to do, but the result was phenomenal!  Below is an image of the finished article and as you can see, our polishers did such a good job of the shine that you can see our workshop roof and wall in the reflection!  Another job well done over here at the mill that we're proud of...happy days!

Busy, busy, busy!

Wow....this week the work has gone mental over here in sunny Huddersfield, West Yorkshire!  Its always a nice feeling when you have a lot of work on rather than being quiet and this week is no exception!

We are currently doing a lot of work for some major brands (top secret though so we can't tell you yet!) and the workshop is filling up quickly with piles of wood that have been cut into components in our joinery shop on the CNC machine - these are now just waiting to be assembled and shipped out!

Wood cut to size by our CNC machine!
Also this week, we are busy making lots of chairs for the Nawaab restaurant in London.  Our joiners are working at the speed of light to get them finished and out on time and are also doing a superb job at stacking them up in order to keep the space to move in the workshop to a maximum - here is how they are looking at the moment:

Chair frames piled high in our workshop!
Once the chairs are finished being built, they will move into our spray shop to be painted to the customer's specification and will then be sent off on their way to be upholstered!  This is a big job for us and our customer that's ongoing, but once it's finished just imagine the amount of people that will sit on them in London whilst eating the delights of a curry!
